Mile 81 by Stephen King
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I’m surprised at how well-reviewed this is. The story was not especially interesting or unique — there’s even a reference by one of the characters in this story to the movie Christine, a sad reminder that this is just a lazy rehashing of a classic by the same author. I guess you can’t blame a famous writer for wanting to coast on his celebrity. Still, the story is just not engaging.
And worse yet…while as I reader I’m generally willing to suspend disbelief, especially when reading Sci Fi or Horror, these characters just never sounded convincing to me. Put simply, I found it easier to believe that a station wagon was actually a tentacled space alien than to believe that the dialogue attributed to Rachel would ever actually be uttered by a six year old girl.
Stephen King can, and has, done much, much better. Save your money.
