I spent the day walking around Christchurch. The city is devastated. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s just block after block, of damaged, boarded up, or missing structures. You come across heavy equipment and construction workers here and there, but mostly what you see is destruction.
But it’s not all bad. There are signs of regrowth. For example, a section of downtown has built up a retail hub using shipping containers. The colors are bright and vibrant, which seems to be a theme here, of regeneration.
This is also seen in the flower shows and other displays of color in the town square.
